4 Baby Care Tidbits Every Parent Should Know!

by Claire James on August 15, 2010

Being a new parent can be overwhelming, because newborn babies do not come with an instruction booklet. A new mother cannot be expected to understand and or deal with all this new information immediately, but there are a few important fundamentals that she needs to know

Bathing your newborn baby: when your baby first comes home it is imperative that you take extra care around the umbilical cord, which stays attached for the first few weeks. When bathing your baby you can only give them a light sponge and when dealing with the umbilical area it is crucial that you take extra care. It is recommended to use a light dabbing action with a cotton bud and clean water to gently bathe the area.

Leaving the hospital: when you leave the hospital with your newborn baby you will want to make sure they are wrapped up nice and snug. Obviously you do this for the baby’s comfort first and foremost but this is also to protect them from the elements like the sun and to keep them warm – new babies are not able to keep themselves as warm as you and I. If you are not carrying your child then I highly recommend looking at the Maclaren strollers range as they are the most highly respected brand and safety must come first with your baby.

Circumcision: Circumcising the baby is sometimes not a choice that you make but dealing with it something that some new parents may find hard. But this is something that should not. The reasons for circumcision are to erase nearly all chances of penile cancer and reduce risk of urinary tract infection, so it is only a good thing.

Crib death (SIDS): Many studies have been done regarding SIDS. Although the cause of SIDS has not been definitely defined, there are some correlations that have been made between SIDS and the following things:

The transportation of your baby is important, and safety should be the primary concern Maclaren strollers are the trusted name in baby strollers and you cannot go wrong with the comfort, reliability and high levels of safety that come with owning a Maclaren Stroller.

You are more likely to suffer from SIDS if your baby is a premature baby, but this is something that is trending down and is almost no longer a major concern

Bath time with your child is all about encouraging the bond between mother and child, but remember that during the first few weeks whilst the umbilical cord is still attached ,extra care needs to be taken at bath time.

Most important beyond all this serious foreboding is to enjoy your new baby! Remember that these moments will not last forever and soon you will look back and wonder what happened to the time- so enjoy and cherish this moment

Children who live in a home with one or more smokers are more likely to be affected by SIDS, and I touch on this again because I want to alleviate any concerns that new parents have about this unspoken topic

Some people say that sleeping with your baby can reduce the risk of SIDS, but the American Academy of Pediatrics disagree with this statement and go on to say that there is a greater risk of SIDS in babies who co-sleep. I also don;t recommend it on the basis that it is just another bad habit that you will eventually have to break

As I mentioned earlier, the primary way to massively reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome is to sleep your baby on his/her back. This is still debated and I honestly don’t know why. If you have concerns, talk to your pediatrician.
